Study Visit to the Avče Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant
On 24 September 2025, the StoreMore project team visited the Avče Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of Slovenia’s key energy storage facilities. The aim of the visit was to gain practical insights into large-scale energy storage operations and their role in balancing the electricity grid.

During the professional program, participants learned about the basic principles of pumped hydro storage: how surplus electricity is used to pump water to an upper reservoir, and how electricity is generated again when the grid requires additional power. Special attention was given to the plant’s role in maintaining grid stability and frequency regulation, which is particularly important as the share of renewable energy sources—such as solar and wind—continues to grow.
The partners also gained insight into the economic aspects of large-scale energy storage and developed a comprehensive understanding of how such facilities contribute to sustainable and secure energy supply.
