Cycling Tourism Survey Results Presented at Austrian Cycling Summit

In June 2025, the 16th Austrian Cycling Summit took place in Saalfelden, Salzburg region, under the motto „Cycling. Region. Move - better cycling in everyday life and leisure“. Irene Bittner from the Austrian Energy Agency (Österreichische Energieagentur) presented key findings from the international Danube Cycling Tourism Survey. Conducted by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) as part of the Interreg Danube Region project Active2Public Transport, the survey captured insights from more than 5,000 cyclists across Europe, with a focus on multimodal travel and integration with public transport.

The presentation highlighted data specific to Austria: 940 of the survey participants chose the country as their cycling holiday destination. Among them, 188 were Austrian residents and others came predominantly from neighboring Danube region countries, including Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

Findings emphasized the importance of better connections between cycling infrastructure and public transport. While 60% of Austrian cycling tourists used trains during their trips, and 75% carried their bicycles on public transport, satisfaction with station facilities and capacity for bike transport remained moderate. Key areas for improvement included bike infrastructure near transit hubs, clear signage, and safe bicycle parking.

The Active2Public Transport project, running from 2024 to 2026, aims to promote sustainable, multimodal travel solutions across the Danube Region. The survey data will inform future strategies to enhance the cycling experience and public transport integration, fostering greener tourism and mobility.
