Czech Active2&Public Transport Working Group Defines Collaborative Governance

The second meeting of the Czech national Active2&Public Transport working group took place on 8 October 2024 in Hodonín (southern Moravia), on the eve of the national conference on 9-10 October 2024. This time the meeting focused on understanding the meaning of Governance. Good governance is a widely accepted international concept referring in the most general sense to the pursuit of practical solutions in the areas of management, resources, ideas and attitudes.

Governance consists of sets of rules that allow stakeholders to decide together on solutions to be implemented. In the context of A2&PT, it is the joint planning of cycling infrastructure, where the aim is to connect all communities with an extended area of responsibility (AORP) with a safe network of cycle-friendly transport routes. However, this is a long time period, whereas policies very often focus on short-term measures. It is therefore necessary to set rules such as the distribution of powers and competences, the role of market and governmental actors, central and decentralised stakeholders and the role of governance in coordinating the diverse needs of many different stakeholders. Many of the current challenges and future solutions of the modern region can be managed by getting governance right and moving towards a more inclusive set of rules.
