Minorities, Migrants & Unemployment: How Food Is Creating Inclusion on the Danube
Across the Danube region, food is more than tradition — it is a tool for social inclusion, economic opportunity, and cultural recognition. Two EU-backed initiatives, Culinary Trail and SReST (Socially Responsible Slow Food Tourism), are putting this idea into practice.
🔹 The Culinary Trail has documented over 700 traditional recipes from ethnic and migrant communities — from Roma and Gorani dishes to Istrian Italian soups — showcasing how food can reflect a rich multicultural heritage and foster new tourism paths.
🔹 SReST links gastronomy with social inclusion, offering training, employment, and new roles to unemployed people, migrants, women, and other vulnerable groups — turning culinary skills into sustainable livelihoods.
Together, these projects demonstrate how food can serve as a catalyst for building bridges, creating jobs, and celebrating diversity across Europe.
