Training in Tryavna Highlights New Opportunities for Sustainable Tourism Linked to Wood and Forests
A special training dedicated to Building Alliances & Networks through the development of sustainable tourism inspired by wood, forests, and traditional craftsmanship was held on 6 November 2025 in Tryavna, Bulgaria. Organized by the Association of Parks in Bulgaria, the event brought together tourism professionals, cultural institutions, local authorities, educators, and private-sector representatives. The training was conducted in a hybrid format, welcoming participants both on-site in Tryavna and online via ZOOM.
More than 25 participants from 11 different institutions took part, exceeding initial expectations. Attendees represented a wide mix of organizations, including tourism associations, cultural and ethnographic museums, academic institutions, municipalities, tour operators, and local artisans. Their shared interest in the role of forests, woodcarving, and traditional crafts in shaping authentic tourism experiences set the tone for an inspiring and collaborative meeting.
The event opened with welcoming remarks from the Association of Parks in Bulgaria, followed by an overview of the Danube Wood(s) Route initiative and a brief introduction of participants. The training featured a series of expert presentations covering diverse aspects of sustainable tourism:
Transformation of natural and cultural landscapes into tourism destinations, using the Devetashko Plateau as an example.
Wood, forests, and traditional woodcarving and how these resources can be transformed into meaningful visitor experiences.
Opportunities for specialized forms of tourism that support local communities.
Creating joint tourism products that bring together destinations, cultural heritage, and local businesses.
The psychology of human connection, offering insight into how experiences rooted in nature and craftsmanship resonate with visitors.
The presentations sparked engaging discussions, with participants exchanging insights, practical experiences, and ideas for future cooperation. After the event, all presentation materials were shared with attendees to support further learning and application in their local contexts.
This training marks an important step toward strengthening sustainable, heritage-based tourism along the Danube, showcasing how forests, craftsmanship, and community knowledge can be brought together to create unique and responsible travel experiences.
