Crafts Bringing People Together in South Bohemia
In the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, traditional crafts are a natural part of everyday life, connecting people, inspiring creativity and opening new possibilities for community and sustainable living.
Rather than focusing only on preserving crafts in their original form, the region is exploring how these skills can be lived, shared and reinterpreted today. From working with textiles and natural materials to repairing everyday objects, crafts are approached as a living practice, rooted in tradition but open to new meanings and uses.
In České Budějovice, the Circular House (Kabinet CB) has developed into a space where people meet, learn new skills and exchange experiences. Through open events and gatherings, crafts are rediscovered as something social, creative and meaningful.
One example is the Knitting Café, a monthly gathering guided by experienced lecturer Marcela Modrová. Open to all ages and skill levels, it offers a relaxed environment where participants knit, sew, learn new techniques or simply enjoy time spent creating together. The informal setting encourages conversation, knowledge sharing and a sense of belonging, making it easy for newcomers to feel welcome.
Another initiative, the Repair Café, brings people together to fix broken items, from electronics and clothes to furniture and toys. With the support of volunteers, participants learn practical repair skills while contributing to waste reduction. These events promote a more thoughtful approach to consumption and create a collaborative, supportive atmosphere.
Together, these initiatives highlight how crafts can strengthen communities, encourage creativity and support more sustainable ways of living.
