How Apatin’s Volunteer Program Unites Generations
Within the framework of the IBC – Inclusive Cross-Border Cycling project, an intergenerational volunteer program has been launched in the Municipality of Apatin, which represents a key segment of activities aimed at connecting older people, young people and people with disabilities. The program is based on a modern approach to storytelling, through which the themes of nature conservation, local history, cultural heritage and inclusion of vulnerable groups are highlighted.
The content of the program is designed so that participants exchange knowledge, skills and life experiences. Older people and people with disabilities share techniques for making souvenirs from clay and other materials, while young people participate in digital recording of stories, collecting photos, as well as in supporting activities that encourage healthy and active living on the stages of the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail.
The program also includes thematic activities in nature, where participants jointly explore local flora and fauna, learn about the importance of environmental conservation, and develop recreational, yoga, and outdoor habits. A special segment is the collection and recording of local stories, old photographs, memories, and urban legends, which will be presented through a digital archive intended to preserve the cultural heritage of Apatin.
Working in mixed groups allows each generation to contribute in its own way – the older ones through traditional skills and experiences, the younger ones through modern tools and new approaches. In this way, an environment is created in which knowledge is naturally passed from one generation to another, while encouraging mutual respect and understanding.
At the end of the first cycle, the impressions were summed up by project manager Renata Kuruc, who emphasised:
“The intergenerational volunteer programs we implement aim to encourage significant interactions between older people, young people and people with disabilities. Through structured activities, participants share knowledge, tradition, skills and modern technologies, thus providing an experience that truly changes the perspectives of all involved.”
“With this program, we want to emphasise how valuable it is when older people share their crafts, skills and stories, while young people bring new techniques and approaches. Such a combination allows cultural heritage to be preserved and passed on.”
