Inclusive Border Cycling: Fostering Intergenerational Connections and Accessibility in Apatin

As part of the “Inclusive Border Cycling” project, funded by the EU’s Transnational Danube Region Programme, partners from Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia are implementing volunteer programs in four cross-border areas. These programs bring together vulnerable groups, including older adults, socially disadvantaged youth, and people with disabilities, fostering inclusion and collaboration.

Recently, in Apatin at the DayCare Centre, people with disabilities joined the silver generation and socially disadvantaged youth in creative workshops organised by the Association of Persons with Disabilities “Birch” (“Breza”). Participants shared experiences and skills while producing ceramic souvenirs such as magnets, cups, and epoxy resin crafts.

For the silver generation and people with disabilities, it is essential to have the support of younger generations. Young people can play a key role in preserving and promoting nature and cultural heritage by assisting with activities that respect the physical abilities of older adults and individuals with disabilities. These groups are eager to share their stories and experiences related to cultural and traditional heritage, creating opportunities for intergenerational learning and connection.

The project’s main goals include strengthening ties between generations, improving the integration of people with disabilities into society, increasing the visibility of marginalised groups, and enhancing the work and standards of participating associations.

A key focus is on engaging both young and elderly participants in the development and maintenance of border cycling routes through innovative, participatory approaches. The ultimate outcome of these volunteer programs will be the adaptation of cycling routes to meet the specific needs of vulnerable groups, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all.
