International award for the best cycling tourism initiative 2025 goes to Amazon of Europe Bike Trail!

The Amazon of Europe Bike Trail has become the first recipient of the Best Cycling Tourism Initiative 2025 award. The award was presented by the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) as part of the international EuroVelo & Cycling Tourism Conference 2025. The event, which took place in Balatonfüred, Hungary, brought together over 300 cycling and tourism experts and sustainability visionaries from across Europe.

The award recognises initiatives that combine sustainability, innovation and a positive impact on local communities and the environment. The Amazon of Europe Bike Trail initiative, which connects five countries along the Mura, Drava and Danube rivers (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia) and also crosses its way with the EuroVelo 13 - The Iron Curtain Trail, was selected for its unique vision – not just as a tourist route, but as a sustainable development project that connects nature, culture and people.

Urška Dolinar, co-founder and director of the Iskriva Institute, highlighted that the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail is not only about creating a cycling route but also about making business possible in a sustainable way—bringing new economic opportunities for local communities while offering authentic experiences for tourists. Tibor Polgárstrategic director of Westpannon, complemented this perspective by reflecting on the demanding process of establishing such a large cross-border initiative. He said that “the creation and development of the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail often felt like riding a unicycle—challenging and unstable at times—but we managed to keep our balance and move forward without falling,” underscoring the perseverance and cooperation required to turn the project into a success.

An inspiring vision that transforms rural areas

The Amazon of Europe Bike Trail is not just a cycling trail – it is a bridge between nature and communities. The 1250 km long route, which runs through the world's first UNESCO 5-country Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve, offers adventures for all levels: from peaceful family trips to demanding multi-day tours, while supporting local farmers, tourism providers, protected areas and environmental initiatives. There are 27 stages available, offering unique sights, various activities and genuine hospitality. We are proud to donate part of the proceeds from reservations to nature conservation programs in the region.

Vision for the future

This achievement opens the door to new opportunities, especially the recognition of the entire region as a green destination and increased international visitation, and in the long term, opportunities for additional development funds. ECF emphasises that such projects serve as an example for the whole of Europe, where cycling is becoming the key to reducing the carbon footprint and revitalising the countryside.
