Building Resilience and Balance in the Danube Region: New Funding Opportunity

The Danube Region is facing growing challenges of territorial peripheralisation and polarisation, dynamics that risk deepening inequalities and undermining balanced social and economic development. Compounding this issue is the limited capacity of local and regional public governance systems to ensure smooth functioning of value chains thus leaving economies more vulnerable to disruptions. Furthermore, recent crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine revealed how unprepared governance systems were to withstand shocks of such scale. At the same time, mechanisms to involve citizens in shaping long-term strategies remain underdeveloped, leaving sustainable democracy more aspirational than operational.

Together, these challenges call for a rethinking of governance models in the Danube Region and to this end, the DRP allocates 4 million euros in funding. This funding is intended to support projects focused on reducing regional disparities while carefully considering current demographic trends as well as the opportunities and challenges brought by recent technological advances, or on reinforcing institutional resilience and transnational capacities of local and regional governance systems to withstand crises and ensure effective operation of value chains. Same funding is available for tackling the insufficient and fragmented public participation in territorial planning and promotion of sustainable democracy.

This funding opportunity represents not only a response to current challenges but also a commitment to foster stronger institutional cooperation and integration able to ensure region’s long-term prosperity and stability through inclusive growth for all its territories and communities with an emphasis on candidate countries in support of their EU accession.
