Celebrating Danube River Day: Be Ready's Lasting Contribution to a More Climate-Resilient Danube Region

Every year on 29 June, Danube River Day celebrates one of Europe's greatest rivers—a symbol of cooperation, biodiversity, and the shared responsibility to protect our environment. For the Be Ready project, this day is also an opportunity to reflect on the power of transnational collaboration in addressing one of the most pressing climate challenges facing our cities: Urban Heat Islands (UHI).

Over the past 30 months, the Be Ready project has brought together 19 partners from 12 countries to strengthen climate resilience across the Danube Region. Through joint research, knowledge exchange, and innovative pilot actions, the partnership has developed practical tools and solutions that help cities better prepare for rising temperatures and extreme heat.

One of the project's most significant achievements is its recognition as a Strategic Project under the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) Priority Area 5 – Environmental Risks. This milestone highlights the project's strategic importance and ensures that its results and recommendations will continue to contribute to regional cooperation and climate adaptation efforts long after the project's completion.

Throughout the project, 10 pilot actions were successfully implemented in cities across the Danube Region, demonstrating innovative green, blue, and white "urban acupuncture" solutions to mitigate Urban Heat Islands and improve the quality of urban public spaces. Building on these experiences, project partners also developed and endorsed 10 Local Action Plans, providing concrete roadmaps for creating cooler, healthier, and more resilient cities.

Beyond local implementation, Be Ready delivered a comprehensive portfolio of outputs, including joint methodologies for UHI risk assessment, digital tools, a multilingual online training programme, a Danube Strategic Framework, and policy recommendations to support local, regional, and national authorities in integrating climate adaptation into urban planning.

Equally important, the project fostered strong cooperation among public authorities, researchers, urban planners, civil society organisations, and citizens through workshops, peer-learning activities, and stakeholder engagement across the Danube Region.

As we celebrate Danube River Day, we also celebrate what can be achieved through cooperation. The Be Ready project leaves behind not only innovative solutions and practical tools, but also a strong network of partners committed to building cooler, greener, and more resilient cities for current and future generations.

Happy Danube River Day!
