Tackling Urban Heat Islands in Historic City Centres: Stakeholders Gather to Exchange Solutions
Experts, public authorities, urban planners, and stakeholders came together at a dedicated dissemination event to raise awareness about the growing impacts of heat stress and urban heat islands (UHI) in cities, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by historic city centres.
The event showcased the objectives and achievements of the Be Ready project and highlighted its synergies with the CICADA4CE project, an Interreg Central Europe initiative promoting climate adaptation through ecosystem services. Representatives from Slovenia's Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning and the Ministry for Culture presented ongoing efforts to address the intersection of climate adaptation and cultural heritage protection, while Slovenian cities shared practical experiences and innovative approaches to mitigating urban heat.
Discussions emphasized that although many effective climate adaptation measures already exist, their implementation remains inconsistent due to fragmented regulations, limited implementation tools, and insufficient institutional capacity. Participants also highlighted the unique challenges of adapting historic city centres, where heritage protection requirements often conflict with climate resilience measures and development interests.
The event concluded with a strong consensus that successful urban heat mitigation requires integrated, place-based solutions combining green infrastructure, sustainable water management, climate-sensitive materials, and active public participation. Speakers stressed the importance of pilot projects, cross-sector collaboration, stronger political commitment, and enhanced support from national authorities to accelerate the transition towards more climate-resilient and liveable cities.
