Peer Visit to Hévíz: Sun-Sail Pilot Reviewed
A peer visit took place in Hévíz on 29–30 September 2025 to review the pilot project introducing sun sails as a “white” measure against urban heat. Representatives from KVA – Kisalföldi Vállalkozásfejlesztési Alapítvány and Podgorica Municipality visited Hévíz to assess the pilot installation implemented in the city’s newly developed square.
The pilot introduced a white shading intervention using sun sails across an open public space. The location was chosen due to its large paved surfaces and frequent summer use, making it highly susceptible to heat stress. As part of the “white acupuncture” approach, the intervention aims to mitigate climate impacts and reduce the urban heat island (UHI) effect through light-reflective, temporary shading.
To provide context, participants were first briefed at the Municipality of Hévíz on local environmental conditions and visitor dynamics. A guided city tour followed, showcasing Hévíz’s green infrastructure and ongoing conservation efforts.
On the second day, the group visited the local farmers’ market to observe how public spaces function under typical conditions. The sun-sail installation, covering approximately 330 m², was then examined on site. Discussions focused on site selection, implementation challenges, and the sustainability and durability of the installation. Reviewers provided feedback and suggestions for refinement and potential upscaling.
One key recommendation was to introduce basic temperature logging in a future season to generate quantitative evidence of the intervention’s effectiveness. Additional ideas included extending the concept to other paved, high-use areas—such as markets, playgrounds, and schoolyards—and combining shading with mobile green or blue elements for added cooling benefits.
