Urban Heat Awareness in Action: Cooling Event in Zenica

As part of the broader efforts under the Be Ready project, the City of Zenica took a hands-on approach to tackling the effects of extreme heat by organizing a public cooling event on July 3rd, 2025, at Alija Izetbegović Square.

Hosted by the Civil Protection Service and the Professional Firefighting Unit Zenica, the event was a direct response to rising summer temperatures and the increasing risks posed by urban heat islands (UHI). Firefighting vehicles sprayed water across the square, turning it into a temporary cooling zone. While enjoying the refreshing experience, children and young people also had the chance to explore firefighting equipment and meet the professionals behind the service.

This event aligns with the Be Ready project’s mission to raise public awareness, especially among vulnerable groups, about the risks of extreme heat. It also demonstrates the importance of community engagement and public awareness in mitigating the impacts of extreme heat in urban environments.
