Watch the Video: Transforming Mali plac into a Climate-Resilient Urban Space in Varaždin
Explore how the city of Varaždin is turning climate adaptation into community action with its pilot intervention at Mali plac, a public square identified as one of the city’s heat-vulnerable urban spots. This transformation, part of the Be Ready project, shows how thoughtful design can improve microclimate comfort and create inviting urban spaces for residents.
Once an exposed, sun-baked square with limited shade and greenery, Mali plac has been revitalised through targeted “acupuncture” measures that help mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. The pilot features three new shading canopies, upgraded urban furniture including benches, tables and swings, and solar-powered lighting - all designed to make the space more comfortable, functional and welcoming, especially during hot summer days.
This video brings the transformation to life: see how design elements were co-created with local residents, universities and municipal departments, and learn how the redesigned square now offers a cooler, more resilient environment for everyday use.
