Zenica Strengthens Its Resilience to Urban Heat

Discover how Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is tackling the challenges of rising urban temperatures through targeted climate adaptation within the Be Ready project.

In one of Zenica’s most densely populated and heat‑exposed neighbourhoods – Londža 2 – the city implemented a green acupuncture intervention that transforms a formerly hard, heat‑accumulating urban corner into a greener, cooler and more welcoming space. This pilot action introduces over 250 new plants, alongside natural landscaping elements and comfortable seating for residents.

The video brings this transformation to life, showing how small‑scale, vegetation‑based measures can deliver tangible benefits — improving the local microclimate, enhancing biodiversity and creating a more pleasant everyday environment for all age groups.

Zenica’s pilot also reflects the city’s broader commitment to sustainable urban development and climate resilience, aligning with other Be Ready partners implementing green, blue and white acupuncture solutions across the Danube Region.

Watch the video to see how strategic greening can help mitigate urban heat, enrich public spaces and inspire future climate adaptation efforts.
