Zenica Endorses Action Plan to Tackle Urban Heat Islands
On 9 April 2026, the City of Zenica marked an important milestone in strengthening local climate resilience with the official endorsement of its Action Plan to Tackle Urban Heat Islands (UHI), developed within the framework of the Be Ready project.
The Action Plan was presented by Kemal Musić, MSc in Horticulture, who developed the document with the institutional support of the City Administration of Zenica, following the Be Ready project template and methodological guidelines. The plan provides a comprehensive framework for addressing urban heat challenges through targeted cooling measures, focusing on identified hotspot zones and long-term adaptation strategies.
The document underwent a scientific peer-review process by project partner JINAG, which confirmed its alignment with the project methodology, including detailed analysis, clearly defined objectives, implementation measures, key performance indicators, and responsibilities. The review highlighted the plan’s strong integration with existing strategic documents and local climate policies.
The stakeholder meeting brought together 24 representatives of Zenica’s local coalition, including public institutions, non-governmental organizations, development agencies, private sector representatives, and public utility companies. Participants actively contributed to discussions, exchanging ideas and providing feedback to further improve the proposed solutions.
Following an open and constructive dialogue, the Action Plan was unanimously endorsed by all participating stakeholders, confirming a shared commitment to addressing urban heat challenges through cooperation and coordinated action.
Aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, the endorsed Action Plan will serve as a strategic framework for implementing future cooling measures and building a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient Zenica.
