Zenica Strengthens Its Resilience to Urban Heat
The City of Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has successfully implemented a green acupuncture measure at the Londža 2 location, completing one of the key pilot activities within the BeReady – Urban Heat Islands Resilience, Preparedness and Mitigation Strategy project.
The pilot site Londža 2 was selected for its position in one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods of Zenica, characterised by limited permeable surfaces, high building density, and significant heat accumulation during summer months. The green acupuncture intervention aims to improve the local microclimate, enhance biodiversity, and reduce heat island effects through targeted landscaping and planting activities.
Within the project, over 250 new plants were introduced, including ornamental shrubs, perennials, and protected species such as Pančić spruce (Picea omorika) and European yew (Taxus baccata). The area was further enhanced with white stone, river pebbles, pine bark, and WPC seating decks, creating a greener and more comfortable environment for residents.
Through this initiative, Zenica reaffirms its commitment to sustainable urban development and climate resilience. Similar blue and white acupuncture measures are being implemented by other BeReady partner cities across the Danube Region, promoting innovative, small-scale solutions for climate adaptation.
