Earth Day Celebrated in Sarajevo: Recycling, Fashion, and Intergenerational Exchange in the Spotlight
On the Earth Day, marked annually on April 22, an event was held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the primary goal of raising awareness about the importance of environmental protection through recycling, reuse, and creative repurposing of materials.The event was organized by KJKP RAD with the support of the Ministry of Communal Economy of Sarajevo Canton- associated partner in the Green-TEX project. KJKP RAD, as a the local partner LP1 SERDA, actively contributes to the implementation of Pilot Activity 1 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Representatives of Green-Tex project LP1 SERDA used the opportunity to present the Green-TEX project to those in attendance, introducing visitors to the project’s goals and activities aimed at promoting sustainable management of textile waste. During the event, visitors had the chance to see hands-on examples of recycling and upcycling, including items made from textiles and leftover materials such as wool. These displays illustrated innovative ways to extend the lifespan of clothing and household items. One of the event’s highlights was a fashion show by high school students, who showcased garments made from recycled materials. In doing so, young people demonstrated that fashion can be both creative and environmentally responsible.Valuable contributions also came from representatives of the older generation, members of healthy aging centers, who shared their experiences through engaging conversations and live demonstrations. They reflected on times when items were routinely altered, reused, and rarely discarded—reminding all present of the importance of using resources wisely and of passing these sustainable values on to younger generations.The event unfolded in a positive and educational atmosphere, highlighting the importance of collective action in preserving our planet—through both innovative projects and a return to valuable practices from the past.
