Exploring Circular Wool Solutions: Green-Tex project at Bulgaria’s National Sheep Breeders’ Festival
At the end of May 2025, Ivan Georgiev, Recycling Manager at Green-Tex project partner Eurotex, attended the National Sheep breeders’ Festival in Bulgaria, an event that traditionally brings together individuals and organizations engaged in livestock farming and the sourcing of locally produced raw materials.
The visit was part of the Green-Tex project, through which Eurotex, via its TexCycle brand, is developing circular solutions for the management of textile resources.
Despite Bulgaria’s strong heritage in sheep farming and wool production, wool remains an underutilized resource. The reasons are an unstable market, limited processing capacity, and low demand. Yet wool is a renewable and biodegradable material with significant potential for use in sustainable manufacturing.
As part of Pilot Activity 2 under the project, project partner Eurotex is testing an innovative nonwoven textile made from recycled fibres and wool. The goal is to explore the material’s potential applications across various products and identify effective ways to better utilize local resources in line with the principles of the circular economy.
During the festival, discussions were held on potential partnerships between farmers, industry, and academia, all aimed at developing practical solutions for sourcing and processing wool at the regional level.
