New seating inspired by the legend of the Pozoj dragon officially unveiled

New seating inspired by the legend of the Pozoj dragon has been officially unveiled in Zrinski Park in Čakovec, at the main contact point of the international route “Green and Mystical Danube Storytelling Route”.

In addition to Čakovec, the seating has also been installed at three other locations – Donja Dubrava, Donji Vidovec and Štrigova. A total of 55 artistically designed seats and one table have been placed, shaping these locations into recognizable contact points for visitors. These points serve as gateways, offering a unique experience of local stories and myths while connecting Međimurje with other destinations included in this international route.

The contact points were established with the aim of valorising natural and intangible cultural heritage as a foundation for the development of sustainable tourism, particularly in rural and less-visited areas. The artistic concept was created by artist Veljko Posavec. The seating is made from natural and sustainable materials – stone and wood – and designed in a circular form that follows the concept of storytelling, encouraging interaction, gathering and a shared spatial experience. The design draws inspiration from the local legend of the Pozoj dragon, which, according to folklore, sleeps beneath the Old Town of Čakovec.

The opening event in Zrinski Park was marked by an educational and creative workshop “Find the Dragon” for students of the 3rd Primary School Čakovec, organized by the Međimurje Museum Čakovec. Through play, storytelling and hands-on activities, students learned about the legend of Pozoj as well as local history and tradition.

The workshop is one of the activities envisaged within the transnational Strategy for the valorisation of natural and intangible cultural heritage in rural, less-visited areas of the Danube Region, developed as part of the Mystical Danube project. Through this project, Međimurje County continues to actively contribute to the development of innovative, sustainable and community-oriented tourism content. At the same time, local heritage is preserved and promoted as an important part of European identity, while the legend of the Pozoj dragon is transformed into a living, experiential story for new generations of residents and visitors.
