Nature Knows the Solutions: Restoring Landscapes Together

How can we restore landscapes to better cope with climate change? And how can we retain water in ways that work with nature, not against it?

These questions shaped the public event “Nature knows the solutions – restoring landscapes together”, organized by WWF Slovakia on the occasion of Earth Day 2026 in Bratislava.

The event brought together around 150 participants, including a strong presence of school groups. Through interactive activities, films, and discussions, visitors explored how rivers, floodplains, and surrounding landscapes function as interconnected systems and why restoring these connections is critical for climate resilience.

Rather than focusing only on theory, the programme highlighted practical examples of nature-based solutions. These were presented not only by RestoRiver, but also by like-minded projects working on similar challenges across the region, offering a broader perspective on how landscape restoration can be implemented in different contexts.

Alongside the public programme, a dedicated policy workshop brought together stakeholders involved in the RestoRiver project. The discussion focused on identifying legislative gaps that currently limit the implementation of nature-based solutions. By addressing these barriers, participants explored how policy frameworks could better support restoration efforts in practice.

The event reflected a key insight: restoring landscapes is not just a technical challenge. It requires coordination between projects, engagement with the public, and critically policy environments that enable solutions to scale.
