Tackling Climate Change and Accidental River Pollution: New Funding Opportunity
The Danube region is experiencing more and more the harsh consequences of climate change. Rising annual temperatures and a growing frequency of extreme weather events, such as intense heatwaves, prolonged dry spells, heavy rainfall or severe storms, are contributing to a greater occurrence of natural disasters like droughts, wildfires, and floods. In addition to these climate-related threats, the region is also contending with incidents of accidental pollution along its major rivers, further straining environmental stability.
In response to these mounting challenges, the Danube Region Programme (DRP) has announced a significant funding opportunity aimed at enhancing region’s preparedness and ability to adapt to climate change, while strengthening its resilience in the face of an increasingly unpredictable climate.
A total of 5.5 million euros has been allocated to support transnational projects that strengthen the region’s capacity to address climate change and environmental risks through collaborative and coordinated efforts. Collaboration with candidate countries is especially important considering programme’s dedication to facilitate the EU enlargement. The funding will support initiatives focused on the development of harmonised systems for climate change modelling, forecasting, and vulnerability assessments or propose joint actions to prevent or mitigate the impacts of floods, droughts, or accidental pollution.
