Field Monitoring of the Eastern Imperial Eagle

On July 6, 2026, The leading partner of the AVIATOR project "Avian Resilience and Adaptation through Awareness, Monitoring, Treatment, and Outreach for Raptors", the Scientific Veterinary Institute of Serbia, carried out an activity contributing to the conservation of the Eastern Imperial Eagle, Serbia's national bird.

The Eastern Imperial Eagle is one of the most important, yet also one of the most endangered birds of prey in Serbia. In recent years, thanks to the tremendous efforts of conservationists, the species has made a historic recovery from the very brink of extinction. Its primary habitats are still located in the Banat region, particularly in northern Banat along the Tisa River and toward the Romanian border. Encouragingly, this year ornithologists recorded active breeding pairs and nests in South Bačka for the first time in several decades. This finding indicates that the species is gradually expanding its range and recolonizing new areas, representing a significant milestone in its conservation.

During fieldwork, the Lead Partner collected biological samples from juvenile eagles to assess their health status, while the eaglets were fitted with identification rings to support future monitoring efforts.
