🦟 What can mosquitoes tell us about wildlife and public health?

Over the past few months, our partners from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the “Ion Ionescu de la Brad” University of Life Sciences in Iași, Romania, have been carrying out fieldwork in two areas around Iași as part of the AVIATOR project.

🔍 During these activities, the team collected mosquito samples to investigate the possible presence of pathogens such as West Nile virus. Mosquitoes can serve as an important early-warning tool, providing valuable information about potential health risks affecting humans, birds, and the wider ecosystem.

🔬🌿 Through molecular biology analyses conducted in the laboratory, the PP9 team is helping to generate valuable data that can support disease surveillance, wildlife protection, and measures aimed at reducing transmission risks. These activities contribute to AVIATOR’s wider goal of strengthening monitoring and prevention approaches for the protection of birds of prey across the Danube Region.

🦅 📖 More about the research activities carried out by our partners in Romania can be found in the article published by Ziarul Delta: https://ziaruldelta.ro/2026/08/27/ce-ne-pot-spune-tantarii-din-delta-dunarii-despre-sanatatea-oamenilor-si-a-pasarilor-rare/ 🔗
