Basin-Wide Coordinated Water Management: New Funding Opportunity
Climate change is placing significant stress on water resources in transboundary river basins across the Danube region. Both surface and groundwater bodies are being increasingly affected, with prolonged periods of low water flow becoming more frequent. This trend is leading to growing water scarcity, compounding the challenges already posed by rising water use, pollution, and contamination.
This calls for an efficient basin-wide approach that goes beyond national boundaries and requires close cooperation between upstream and downstream countries with the engagement of key sectors such as water management, agriculture, forestry, environmental protection, nature conservation, navigation, and hydropower generation.
In response to these pressing issues, the Danube Region Programme (DRP) has launched a funding opportunity of 5 million euros to support initiatives aimed at developing and implementing harmonized water management practices across borders while placing a particular emphasis on assisting candidate countries. The goal is to improve the region’s resilience to low-water periods, alleviate water scarcity, and ensure a more balanced and sustainable use of water resources.
By fostering dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders, this coordinated approach can help safeguard water supplies, protect ecosystems, and promote long-term water security in the face of climate-related challenges.
