Celebrating International Women’s Day: Women Driving Change across the Danube Region
As International Women’s Day approaches, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the strides being made towards gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and inclusive opportunities across the Danube Region. A number of Danube Region Programme-funded projects are actively supporting women, whether by improving access to labour markets, creating tailored pathways into traditionally male-dominated sectors, fostering entrepreneurship, or building mentorship and policy frameworks that bolster women’s roles in economic and social transformation.
These initiatives show how collaborative transnational efforts can challenge structural inequalities and support women in realising their potential across industries, communities, and economies.
One of the most direct examples of strengthening women’s participation in the labour market is the WIN initiative (EUSDR flagship project), which focuses on enhancing the socio-economic position of women in peripheral industrial regions. Traditional industrial labour markets have long been dominated by male employment and skill hierarchies. WIN seeks to address these entrenched disparities by analysing women’s needs, identifying institutional barriers, and co-creating social innovations to improve access to skills, jobs and entrepreneurial pathways for women. By organising pilot activities, forming innovation groups, and engaging stakeholders across borders, the project promotes inclusive labour market participation and supports policy recommendations to foster gender-inclusive economic policies across the Danube Region.
Another initiative taking on sectoral gender imbalances and trying to open new career paths in male-dominated sectors is Fem2forests, which addresses labour shortages and gender exclusion in the forestry sector. Long associated with male-dominated professional roles, forestry has historically offered limited opportunities for women. Fem2forests works to change these perceptions and strengthen the involvement of girls and young women at every stage, from early orientation to leadership levels, by involving education institutions, employers and learners in interactive workshops and stakeholder dialogues.
Promoting female entrepreneurship is another powerful theme. The WE.Circular project boosts the digital, business and circular economy capacities of women entrepreneurs in the Danube Region. Although overall female entrepreneurship remains under-represented, this project supports women through innovative training, transnational learning events, and the development of circular business models. By creating networks, enhancing digital and circular competencies, and engaging policymakers, the project strengthens the position of women in business and prepares them for the transition to Industry 4.0 and circular economic systems.
Another related initiative is IMPACTA, which takes an entrepreneurial and mentorship-driven approach to gender equality. The project targets women business actors and women investors working in socially innovative sectors. Through transnational collaboration, shared best practices, and tailored support strategies, the project fosters an inclusive ecosystem of mentorship, networking, and capacity building that integrates vulnerable groups, including young women, rural women and women business angels, into broader economic frameworks.
The DINAMIC DANUBE project, while focused on strengthening small family farms and rural bio economy, also highlights the importance of women’s involvement in rural innovation and sustainable agriculture. With an explicit focus on training, mentorship and digital upskilling for farm representatives, including a strong focus on women participants, the project supports women as key actors in rural development and modern agricultural practices.
These diverse yet interconnected efforts demonstrate that transnational cooperation can drive meaningful change, opening doors for women in every sector, strengthening economic resilience, and fostering more equitable and inclusive societies. As these initiatives continue to evolve, they reinforce the vision of a Danube Region where women’s full participation and leadership is not just encouraged, but actively supported and sustained.
