ParkLIFE: Smart technology for healthier parks in small towns

Can public parks be managed with the same precision as smart mobility or energy systems? And can small municipalities lead meaningful innovation?
An agile pilot in Nova Crnja, Serbia, implemented by TeleGroup Ltd, shows that both are not only possible — but highly practical.

ParkLIFE is a digital solution designed to help municipalities manage public green areas more efficiently, using real-time data, forecasting, and citizen engagement. The pilot demonstrated how technology can support greener, healthier parks while optimising public resources.

How ParkLIFE works

1) GIS-based mapping of green infrastructure
A GIS system enables digital mapping and visualisation of public green areas, including key assets and infrastructure such as benches, pathways and waste bins.

2) Real-time environmental monitoring
Integrated meteorological stations and sensors provide live data on soil moisture, temperature and air quality.

3) Data-driven recommendations for maintenance planning
A smart platform produces actionable recommendations for municipal maintenance planning and resource allocation, supported by localised forecasts.

4) Transparent maintenance records and GPS support
Maintenance activities (e.g., watering, mowing, planting) are recorded and supported by GPS tracking, enabling better oversight of teams, tasks and resources.

5) Citizen reporting and communication
A dedicated application allows citizens to report issues such as damage, littering or plant diseases, access relevant information, and receive notifications about park activities and weather conditions.

Benefits for municipalities and citizens

The pilot highlighted several clear advantages:

  • Better oversight and faster response: timely identification of issues and improved management of assets and maintenance workflows.

  • Cost savings and efficiency: optimised resource allocation and proactive planning help reduce operational costs.

  • Higher quality public spaces: healthier parks contribute to wellbeing, comfort and community life.

  • Stronger community involvement: citizen reporting and feedback support co-creation and strengthen local ownership of public spaces.
